Keeping STEM Students on Track to Graduation
Launching with $5 million in founding support from the firms and Griffin Catalyst, the initiative addresses a growing shortage of domestic math talent at a time when demand for expertise in artificial intelligence, data science, quantitative research, engineering, and related fields continues to accelerate.
“Education unlocks opportunities that change lives and fuel our nation’s success,” said Julia Quinn, director of philanthropy for the firms and Griffin Catalyst. “We are proud to support the Mathematical Association of America and the Last Mile Education Fund in helping the next generation of leaders and problem-solvers complete their degrees and pursue their dreams.”
Each year, roughly 2,000 mathematics and quantitative science majors leave school just a few semesters before graduation because of relatively small financial emergencies, such as a tuition shortfall, unexpected medical bills, car repairs, or housing or food insecurity. The National Math Talent Fund will provide rapid-response grants—typically under $3,000—to help students stay enrolled, complete their degrees, and launch careers in high-demand fields.
The initiative builds on Last Mile’s proven model, which has already supported more than 14,000 students at over 1,100 colleges and universities while achieving an 80% graduation rate. Through MAA’s nationwide network of mathematics departments, faculty, and regional sections, the National Math Talent Fund will identify students in need, connect them with financial support, and provide mentorship as they prepare for mathematically rich careers.
